SARASOTA, Fla. – The Orioles will play their first home afternoon Grapefruit League game today against the Twins at Ed Smith Stadium.
New Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen, a Taiwanese left-hander who played the past four years in Japan, will make his debut today. Chen struggled in his intrasquad game last week, so it will be interesting to see how he rebounds today.
In other pre-game news:
-- LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (left elbow) and RHP Willie Eyre (groin) will both pitch bullpen sessions off a full mound before the game on the back fields. Will have updates from that shortly.
-- Minor league catcher Michael Ohlman was involved in an automobile accident while driving home from Tuesday’s workout. He is OK, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said doctors are checking his right shoulder for possible injury. Olhman joined camp after nonroster invitee Ronny Paulino didn’t show up for camp (O’s are still waiting) and would likely join the team’s minor league camp.
-- Showalter said he will meet with executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette over the next two days to discuss the first round of roster cuts. Showalter wouldn’t give a set number of cuts the team is aiming for with this round.
-- Showalter has been impressed with nonroster invitee Nick Johnson, who has been working good at-bats in two starts so far. He’s been at DH but will see time at 1B. That flexibility will help him in trying to make this team.
Here’s the Orioles’ lineup today:
Endy Chavez RF
J.J. Hardy SS
Adam Jones CF
Chris Davis 1B
Matt Wieters C
Mark Reynolds 3B
Wilson Betemit DH
Nolan Reimold LF
Robert Andino 2B
Wei-Yin Chen LHP
