All good things must come to an end, and today is the final day of Orioles spring training camp in Sarasota.
Luggage and packed boxes are all around the Ed Smith Stadium complex. Tractor trailers started transporting players’ automobiles last night. (There’s one parked in front of the complex right now.) There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the clubhouse.
Everyone’s ready to head north.
But first, the Orioles will finish their exhibition schedule here with a game against State College of Florida, a junior college located here in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.
The Orioles will provide pitching for both teams. Jason Hammel will start for the Orioles, and Tsuyoshi Wada is slated to start on behalf of State College of Florida.
Since this is an exhibition against the college team, don’t look too much into Wada’s stat line. His pitch count will be interesting. But the Orioles still need to figure out whether he’s in the Opening Day starting rotation or if he will stay in Sarasota for extended spring training for more seasoning.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he might be able to announce the club’s starting rotation after the game.
Also of note, former Orioles pitcher Jason Johnson is in camp today hoping to throw in front of the Orioles and earn a spot in extended spring training. Johnson, 38, had labrum surgery two years ago and is attempting a comeback.
He worked out for the Giants two weeks ago and drove down to Sarasota from his home in Tampa after he spoke with Orioles special assistant and former Orioles teammate Brady Anderson.
Johnson was 34-53 with a 4.83 ERA in parts of five seasons with the Orioles.
