Orioles pregame notes on Gonzalez, Davis, Berry and Hunter

Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle Friday, plans for his time on the DL to be short.

Gonzalez is slated to throw a bullpen on Sunday or Monday, and said he hopes to make a minor league rehab start at either Class-A Frederick or Double-A Bowie by midweek.

The DL move on Gonzalez is retroactive to May 31, so he would be eligible to return June 15.

“I think that’s the best thing we could have done,” Gonzalez said. “It gives me time to recover and be 100 percent for the next time I have to be out there and perform. … It’s still early. We don’t want to rush it and miss more time than what I needed. With obliques, you need to take care of it and make sure it’s 100 percent.”

-- First baseman Chris Davis had a heavy ice pack on his right hip but was still in the team’s starting lineup for tonight’s game against the Oakland Athletics at Camden Yards.

Davis said he still has some discomfort in the hip after an awkward headfirst slide trying to extend a single into a double in the eighth inning of Friday’s game.

While trying to dodge A’s second baseman Nick Punto’s tag, Davis landed on his right side as he pulled back his left hand and tried to touch the bag with his right.

Davis said he had a nasty scrape the his right side. He also caught a spike on his left shin.

-- Before the game, the Orioles optioned left-hander Tim Berry to Bowie to make room for right-hander Kevin Gausman, who will start tonight’s game.

Berry wore a big league uniform for the first time Friday after he was recalled by the Orioles to provide extra bullpen insurance.

He didn’t pitch in the game, but Berry’s short major league stint was still a memorable one.

“It was all worth it just for yesterday’s experience,” said Berry, who was a 50th-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft. “It was just unbelievable. I’m hoping to get one more day at a time and just take it all in and have fun.

“I was trying to stay ready at all times,” Berry added. “I wasn’t trying to speculate whether I was going to go in this situation. I was just enjoying the game from the pen and it was a really cool experience.”

The Orioles might need to make another roster move tomorrow to activate right-hander Tommy Hunter (left groin strain), who is making a rehab appearance tonight at Class-A Delmarva. Hunter will likely pitch the second or third inning.

Here are tonight’s starting lineups:
