On the eve of the Orioles’ series opener against the New York Yankees, manager Buck Showalter still wouldn’t tip his hand on who would start Friday night at Camden Yards.
Showalter said right-hander Kevin Gausman and left-hander T.J. McFarland are of the Orioles’ options, but he wouldn’t give the edge to one over the other.
Gausman hasn’t pitched since June 19 at Triple-A Norfolk and was called up to provide bullpen depth Monday. He's 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA in five major league starts. McFarland allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief in a 13-5 loss at Toronto on Sunday. McFarland has been the Orioles’ primary long reliever this season and has yet to make a start.
Showalter said he will wait until after Thursday’s game to decide who will make the start in case he has to go deep into the bullpen and needs Gausman or McFarland for a long relief situation.
** Outfielder Henry Urrutia was promoted from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday. Urrutia was leading the Eastern League in hitting with a .365 average to go with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 200 at-bats over 52 games. Showalter said Urrutia showed improved defense to go with his hot bat.
** Outfielder Nolan Reimold isn’t having any problems with his hamstring on his rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie, Showalter said. Reimold’s main focus has been becoming more comfortable at the plate. He hasn’t played for the Orioles since May 11.
