Orioles pregame notes on Chris Davis, Johan Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, did some light exercises – including work with a resistance band -- before this afternoon’s game with strength coach Joe Hogarty. Manager Buck Showalter is pleased with his quick progress.

“He’s doing some things a little earlier that some guys do with that injury,” Showalter said. “That’s kind of good to see. He’s been in the pool doing some movement.”

Left-hander Johan Santana’s first extended spring training outing scheduled for today in Sarasota, Fla., was rained out. His two-inning outing has now been rescheduled for Monday, which will allow Showalter to attend because the team will be off and already in Tampa for a series against the Rays.

If all goes well, Santana's next step will be a three-inning stint Saturday in an extended spring game.

Showalter said the organization still isn’t to the point of discussing Santana returning to minor league games, but his recovery from a second shoulder surgery in three years continues to be encouraging.

“I think it’s still a little early, but he’s had no setbacks. His velocity is inching up. I’m really looking forward to getting my eyes on him, seeing the arm swing. When you’ve seen a guy for years, you kind of know what it looks like. I think I’ll probably watch some tape of him before I go over there when he was right to get a visual.”

Coming off his best start as an Oriole on Friday night, right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez said a minor adjustment he made since his last start made a big difference.

Jimenez said he studies video of his April starts with pitching coach Dave Wallace and bullpen coach Dom Chiti and compared them to past seasons, including his breakthrough 2010 season with the Rockies.

Wallace noticed that Jimenez’s right foot was slightly tilted toward third base instead of straight along the rubber. It was just a difference of a couple of inches, but Jimenez said the adjustment helped him command his fastball better on Friday night.

Also, since Jimenez was working on six days rest, he was able to throw two side sessions since his last start to work on the adjustment.
