TORONTO -- Several nuggets of news came out of Buck Showalter’s pregame meeting with reporters here in Toronto. Here’s a quick rundown of what he said:
-- 2B Brian Roberts (right hamstring surgery) continues to progress with his rehab and is slated to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday at Triple-A Norfolk.
-- LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left oblique strain), who came out of his first sim game on Thursday well, will throw a four-inning sim game on Monday and if all goes will will then make a minor-league rehab start next Saturday at a minor-league affiliate to be determined. Norfolk, Double-A Bowie and Class-A Frederick are all at home.
-- RHP Steve Johnson (left oblique strain) will begin a throwing progression on Saturday by playing catch in Sarasota
-- 2B Jonathan Schoop (stress fracture in lower back) will begin taking ground balls on Monday.
-- RHP Dylan Bundy, who hasn’t pitched just late March, is now throwing long toss from 125 feet and should progress to a mound shortly, Showalter said.
-- Showalter hasn’t made a decision whether Freddy Garcia or Zach Britton will pitch Sunday’s series opener. It appears that if the Orioles can stay away from using Garcia out of the pen over the next two days, he will start Sunday. Whoever doesn’t start Sunday will likely start Monday against the Indians at Camden Yards.
