Paul Janish, fresh off the birth of his third child, joined the Orioles Saturday. He's starting Game 1 at SS.

In a season largely bereft of Orioles roster drama, Saturday’s doubleheader is providing the first set of major machinations with the pending addition of shortstop Paul Janish.

Manager Buck Showalter announced before the game that Janish would be added to the 40-man roster and will start at shortstop in the first of two games against the Oakland Athletics. Left-hander T.J. McFarland was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, and right-hander Scott McGough was designated for assignment to accommodate the move.

Janish, 33, hit .329 with two doubles in 21 games for Triple-A Norfolk this season. He’s considered a premier defender at shortstop, and joins the team after his wife gave birth to the family’s third child Friday in Houston.

Showalter said he doesn’t want to move Manny Machado off shortstop too much in the absence of J.J. Hardy (foot fracture), indicating that Janish could see more time in a platoon with Ryan Flaherty at third base. Showalter didn’t want to subject Machado to 18 innings at shortstop, though.

“There’s a lot more physical and mental challenges at shortstop for 18,” Showalter said. “He’ll play shortstop the second game. I didn’t want to do that to him two games.”

A second player will be added for the second game, as major league rules allow for a 26th player on the active roster when there are two games in one day. The Athletics plan to add reliever Andrew Triggs, who the Orioles designated for assignment during spring training.

Showalter indicated it was a pitcher who would be their 26th man, and it could even be McFarland, though he'd still have to go to Norfolk on Sunday. McGough had a 12.71 ERA in six appearances since the Orioles claimed him from the Miami Marlins in April.
