The Orioles placed outfielder Steve Pearce on the 15-day disabled list with left wrist tendinitis before Friday’s game and activated right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the paternity list.
Even though Pearce has made just one start over the past 10 days, the Orioles could only backdate the move to Thursday because he played as a late-inning sub Wednesday, so he isn’t eligible to return until July 5 against the Yankees.
“Stevie’s wrist has been bothering him for a while and we decided to try to get it 100 percent, really both of them, but more the left one than the right one,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “I think it’s been bothering him a lot more than he’s let on. He’s trying to clear it up. … He’s got 13 days, go out get some at-bats, and hopefully it heals in the [DL] period.”
Showalter said the club might do some additional tests to ensure there’s nothing structurally wrong with the wrist, but Pearce will stay with the team throughout the weekend and return with the club to Baltimore.
“He’s not going to do anything for a few days and we’ll see how it resolves [itself],” Showalter said. “But he’s been getting treatment on it every day. … He’s a tough guy. He’s a professional hitter. It’s probably been bothering him for a while. I know he’s been getting treatment on it for a while. It’s gone back for a while. I think this has kept him from putting his best foot forward.”
