Orioles place Endy Chavez on DL, call up Steve Tolleson

With interleague play looming and a need for a flexible bench paramount, the Orioles decided to place outfielder Endy Chavez on the disabled list and call back infielder/outfielder Steve Tolleson, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.

Chavez left Tuesday’s game in the sixth inning with a right hamstring strain. He was hoping it would only take a few days to heal, but the Orioles couldn’t wait with games at Atlanta and the New York Mets on the horizon.

“I feel pretty close, but I have to understand where the team is right now, and they had to make a move,” said Chavez, who had missed three weeks in May with a left oblique strain. “It’s not fun. I am a little disappointed. Hopefully, I’ll get healthy real soon.”

Chavez, who has hit .162 in 32 games with the Orioles this season, said he expects to be ready even before the 15 days are up, though he’ll obviously have to wait until he is eligible to be activated. He said he doesn’t know if he will travel with the team when it goes on this week’s road trip.

Tolleson drove down to Triple-A Norfolk with his wife and daughter on Thursday, only to get a call as he was unpacking that he might be needed back with the Orioles.

“It’s a much better four-hour ride coming back than it is going down,” said Tolleson, who is batting eighth and starting in left field Thursday. “But that’s kind of out of my control. I’m happy to be here and definitely happy to be playing.”

Tolleson hit .237 with two homers and six RBIs in 12 games. His three-run homer on Sunday against Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee helped the Orioles beat the Phillies. He was then sent down on Tuesday after Brian Roberts was activated from the disabled list.
