Orioles option T.J. McFarland back to Triple-A Norfolk after long relief appearance

The Baltimore Sun

Soon after left-hander T.J. McFarland saved the Orioles bullpen with a solid three-ininng relief effort, he found out that he would be headed back to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for a much-needed additional position player.

The oblique injury that sidelined first baseman Chris Davis has yet to be fully evaluated, so no decision has been made on whether he'll have to go on the disabled list.

In the meantime, he'll still hold a roster spot so somebody will have to parachute in to give the O's additional infield depth for the remaining weekend games against the Kansas City Royals.

It probably won't be a first baseman unless Dan Duquette has some kind of deal up his sleeve, since the Orioles don't really have a major-league-ready player at that position in the system.

Club officials are probably cursing the timing of the injury along with the possible ramifications, because the Orioles recently designated versatile outfielder/first baseman Steve Pearce for assignment.
