Gausman last pitched June 19 in his lone start at Triple-A Norfolk and was slated to make the next start for the Tides, who are off Monday. He was listed among the Orioles’ relievers for Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards. Showalter said Gausman is a candidate for Friday’s start against the New York Yankees.
“He was the guy that fit our needs,” Showalter said. “Would have loved to left him there. Everybody would have but we had a need, and other options weren’t available, so we did that.”

Gausman replaced right-hander Freddy Garcia, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. In five starts with the Orioles earlier this season, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft was 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA. He said he hasn’t entered a game in relief since high school.
“We’d have preferred to left him down there, but where we are and where our roster is, he was the most likely guy to come back,” Showalter said. “He’s available to give us length tonight. Hope we don’t need it, but you better prepare for it.”
Second baseman Brian Roberts (hamstring) will report to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday to begin his rehab assignment. Showalter said Roberts should be there at least three days.
Outfielder Nolan Reimold (hamstring) is continuing his rehab at Double-A Bowie. He’s 2-for-21 in six games.
Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) pitched a four-inning simulated game and will join the team Tuesday. He’s expected to do one or two rehab starts before returning to the Orioles’ roster.
Former Oriole Mark Reynolds is starting at third base and batting sixth for Cleveland on Monday.
High-A Frederick catcher Michael Ohlman was named Carolina League Player of the Week. He has a six-game hit streak and has four multi-hit games over that span.
The Orioles signed right-hander Casey Upperman to a minor league deal, and he has reported to Delmarva. He was pitching for independent Normal (Ill.) in the Frontier League.
