They say you’re not really supposed to read much into baseball standings until Memorial Day, and power rankings surely fall under the same umbrella.
But it’s probably OK for Orioles fans to take a little satisfaction in seeing that their team is tied for first place in the AL East – and tops in all of baseball according to one national analyst.
Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports posted his latest rankings of baseball’s 30 teams today, and it has the Orioles (21-13) leaping from fifth all the way to No. 1.
Brown doesn’t give much explanation for why he put the Orioles at the top. His comment centers on oft-injured second baseman Brian Roberts.
But after the Orioles finished their 11-game West Coast road trip 7-4 and then pulled into a tie with the Red Sox on Wednesday night, it’s clear they’re no longer getting overlooked by the national media.
Again, these rankings are quite unscientific – especially in early May. Tribune’s national writer Phil Rogers has the O’s ranked 8th this week. The most recent ESPN rankings also have the Orioles at No. 8.
