Orioles minor leaguer arrested on suspicion of DUI

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Orioles minor league pitcher Ryan O'Shea, who is participating in the organization's minor league camp at Twin Lakes Park, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of driving under the influence in Siesta Key, according to an Sarasota County Sherriff's Office arrest affidavit obtained by The Sun.

O'Shea, a 25-year-old who pitched at Single-A Frederick last season, was pulled over at 4:23 Wednesday afternoon on Ocean Drive -- the main route through Siesta Key -- for a seat-belt violation.

The arresting officer smelled a strong scent of alcohol on O'Shea's breath, the report said. O'Shea, who initially told the officer he hadn't been drinking, failed a series of on-site sobriety tests and was arrested at the scene and booked on $500 bond.

Twenty-one minutes after the stop, O'Shea was administered two Breathalyzer tests, which registered  blood alcohol levels of .074 and .072, the affidavit said. Florida's legal limit is .08

Another Orioles minor leaguer, pitcher Clayton Schrader, was in the passenger seat. He was not cited.

In a questionnaire given to those arrested on suspicion of DUI, O'Shea later admitted he was drinking, saying he had three beers. At the time of his arrest, he said he was driving from the Siesta beach parking lot to a friend's house. He also said he spent the morning "playing baseball" at Twin Lakes Park. He listed the Orioles as his employer.

O'Shea, a 27th-round selection in 2008 by the Orioles, was 3-6 with a 3.09 ERA in 25 games (eight starts) at Frederick last season. He owns a career 20-23 record with a 3.53 ERA in 94 career appearances over four years.
