Orioles' Miguel Gonzalez keeps building on his streak of consistency

With another win Thursday night against the Texas Rangers, Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez continued his quietly consistent streak of pitching performances.

Gonzalez allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in the Orioles’ 3-1 victory at Camden Yards. It was the 12th time in his 16 outings that he put together a quality start, and his seventh straight, the longest streak by an Oriole this year. During that streak, he’s 5-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 47 innings.

“He's been pretty consistent, and that's all we're asking,” manager Buck Showalter said. “It's asking a lot. Going through major league lineups, especially one like Texas, is difficult. That's why not many people can do it.”

While Orioles starters have had issues pitching deep into games at times this season, occasionally taxing the bullpen, Gonzalez has been a model of consistency. He’s recorded at least one out in the sixth inning in each of his 16 starts this year and 22 straight dating back to Aug. 10, 2012. That’s the third longest active streak in the majors behind Atlanta’s Mike Minor and St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright, who each have streaks of 23.

“Buck likes that,” Gonzalez said. “He wants us to go out there and try and do our best and go deep in the games, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do every time out there. There are sometimes you throw more pitches than you like, like I said, this team battled.”

When Gonzalez has pitched at Camden Yards this year, it’s been a win. The Orioles are 8-0 in his eight home starts, and they’ve won 12 straight games he’s started dating back to Aug. 10, 2012. It’s the fourth longest streak in Orioles history (Mike Flanagan has the longest streak with 16.)

On the year, Gonzalez is 7-3 with a 3.48 ERA, which is the second lowest among Orioles starters.
