Orioles make pitch to host 2016 All-Star Game

The Orioles have approached Major League Baseball about the potential of hosting the 2016 All-Star Game at Camden Yards, a club spokesman confirmed.

There is no formal application process, but club owner Peter Angelos did send a letter to baseball commissioner Bud Selig requesting that Baltimore host the 2016 event.

Although teams can present their interest to the league office at any time, MLB usually officially awards its next All-Star Game roughly a year before the event. And, traditionally — although not always — the Midsummer Classic alternates between American League and National League hosts, meaning the game would likely come to Baltimore only in an even-numbered year.

This July, it will be at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., and it is expected to be held at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, in 2013. The Minnesota Twins are hoping to host it in 2014 — which means the next likely opening for an AL city would be in 2016.

That would mark the 25th season of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which has hosted one All-Star Game: in 1993, the year after it opened.

The Orioles have been hoping to bring the All-Star Game back to Baltimore for the past few years but have been behind newer, renovated or closing stadiums.

This year, the club is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the downtown stadium — and its 21st season — with events throughout the season, including the dedication of six statues of Orioles Hall of Famers.

The Baltimore Business Journal first reported the Orioles’ interest in hosting the 2016 game.
