The Orioles acquired minor league outfielder Eric Thames from the Seattle Mariners’ organization Sunday afternoon for infielder Ty Kelly.

Thames, 26, has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. He is currently on the disabled list with a non-displaced fractured in his left hand after being spiked in a game June 15. A former seventh-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008 out of Pepperdine, Thames has played in 181 major league games in his career for the Blue Jays and Mariners, batting .250 with a .296 on-base percentage and 21 homers.

In 57 games with Triple-A Tacoma in 2013 before his injury, the left-handed hitting Thames was batting .295 with a .382 on-base percentage and seven homers.

“That’s a good deal for both clubs,” Showalter said Sunday. “Good hitter. Interesting hitting resume and an option.”

The 24-year-old Kelly hit .283 in five seasons with the Orioles organization after being taken in the 13th round of the 2009 draft out of UC-Davis. He was hitting .283 with one homer and 47 RBIs at Double-A Bowie.
