TAMPA, Fla. -- Left-hander T.J. McFarland has been scratched from his scheduled start at Triple-A Norfolk on Monday night, and he likely will join the Orioles for their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Tuesday, according to an industry source.
Following Sunday’s 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Orioles manager Buck Showalter expressed concern about the overuse of his bullpen, especially since Tuesday begins a span in which the Orioles play 13 straight days and 26 of their next 27 days.
McFarland is an ideal candidate because his mandatory 10-day window of remaining in the minor leagues after being optioned expires Tuesday, so he can be recalled.
The Orioles could add McFarland as an extra reliever to make a 13-man staff and play with a short bench, or they could send an optionable existing reliever – right-hander Brad Brach would seem to be the most likely – down to Norfolk.
Left-hander Nick Additon will start Monday night in McFarland’s place at Norfolk.
