Orioles left-hander Zach Britton back from sickness; Manny Machado plays first extended spring game

The Baltimore Sun

BOSTON -- Left-handed reliever Zach Britton was the latest victim of the illness bug that’s gone around the clubhouse the past two weeks.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Britton was sent back to the team hotel before Friday’s game and was unavailable to pitch. Britton received an IV treatment early Friday morning, Showalter said.

That was part of the reason left-hander Brian Matusz, who was the only left-hander available, went 2 2/3 innings in yesterday's 8-4 win at Fenway Park, Showalter said.

Showalter said Britton is back and available today.

Center fielder Adam Jones, left-hander Brian Matusz and right-hander Evan Meek – as well as hitting coach Jim Presley -- have all come down with sickness over the past two weeks.

And Showalter said he’s not convinced that the bug is done affecting the Orioles clubhouse. During the club’s most recent homestand, the entire clubhouse was disinfected, down to the pingpong paddles and pool sticks.

“Obviously, it’s just a matter of who,” Showalter said.  “I’m waiting for a day when it’s the starting pitcher that day. We’re lucky that hasn’t happened.”

**Orioles third baseman Manny Machado played in his first extended spring game in Sarasota, Fla., this morning. He played five innings at third base and went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, fielder’s choice and strikeout.

Machado will take Sunday off as a regularly scheduled off day as part of his rehab. He is scheduled to play seven innings at third base Monday and start at DH on Tuesday.
