Orioles right-hander Jason Hammel will make his second minor league rehabilitation start Tuesday for short-season Class-A Aberdeen.
He is scheduled to throw between 60 and 65 pitches or go five innings, whichever comes first, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Hammel tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings for Double-A Bowie on Thursday night, his first time facing hitters since going on the disabled list with a right forearm strain on July 29.
He threw 47 pitches (32 strikes), allowing three hits with no walks and two hit batsmen. Afterward, Hammel said he was able to get the full extension on all of his pitches – particularly his slider, which he hadn’t previously been able to do with the injury.
Showalter said Hammel could be activated from the DL next weekend against the Chicago White Sox.
Before pitching for Aberdeen, Hammel will throw a bullpen at Class-A Frederick.
While Hammel said it’s been difficult being away from the team, he’s learned from last year’s premature return from arthroscopic right-knee surgery and doesn’t want to come back until he’s 100 percent.
“I’ve learned my lesson from last year,” Hammel said Thursday. “I know the guys can use me, and I want to help out, but I’m more helpful when I’m healthy, so obviously get healthy and then go. We’ve got plenty of arms up there and plenty of guys who can do the job, so I’m not worried about that.”

Utility man Ryan Flaherty, who was optioned to the minors on Tuesday, was transferred Friday to High-A Frederick from Low-A Delmarva, where he was 2-for-8 in two games for the Shorebirds. Flaherty is expected to return to the big league club Tuesday after Frederick’s season is finished. … Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, who was optioned to the Gulf Coast League after his previous start, is expected to fly back from Florida on Saturday and is scheduled to start the Orioles’ series finale in New York. … Right-hander Scott Feldman, slated to start Saturday, is 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees, including three quality starts.
