A shorter, slightly different right-field wall at Camden Yards

The Orioles announced their plans to renovate Camden Yards for the stadium’s 20th anniversary this upcoming season and, as I am sure you all know by now, that includes six bronze statues of the club’s current Hall of Famers.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit nearly every Major League Baseball stadium. And Camden Yards, 20 years in, is still one of the best if not the best (I love the parks in San Francisco and Pittsburgh, too). Having the statues – of Frank and Brooks Robinson, Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr. – will make Camden Yards even cooler.

I know what you really want is changes on the field, and I get that, but that’s still a cool addition, especially considering all of them are alive and can enjoy the unveiling.

There is one alteration next year, however, that could change a game on occasion.

The flag-court wall in right, which is on top of the out-of-town scoreboard, will be altered. Basically, the wall portion that protects fans that stand there will be removed and be replaced by a railing. That way shorter people – and, specifically, kids – will have a better view of the field of play while standing on the flag court.

Makes plenty of sense. However, that means more balls may end up flying out for homers instead of bouncing off the top of the wall for doubles or long singles. I’m not sure exactly how many fly balls it will affect, but I’ll keep an eye on it next year.

I also don’t know what will happen if a ball hits the railing – whether that will be an automatic homer or will be in play. I asked an Orioles spokesman and was told that decision has not been announced yet.

Anyway, thought it was interesting and thought I’d pass it on to you.
