Outfielder Nolan Reimold (hamstring) was scheduled to bat third as the designated hitter at Double-A Bowie on Friday, but the Baysox's contest was rained out. They will play a doubleheader Saturday against Harrisburg.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Reimold is expected to be activated for next week’s road trip.
Infielder Wilson Betemit (knee) resumed baseball activities Friday after taking a few days off because of soreness.
Right-hander Steve Johnson (oblique) continues to throw off flat ground.
Infielder Jonathan Schoop (back), the organization's top position prospect, has resumed baseball activities. Showalter said the target date for his return to game action is July 17, though it could be earlier.
Outfielder Steve Pearce (wrists) hasn't resumed baseball activities. The Orioles placed him on the 15-day disabled list June 21, and he left for Sarasota, Fla., after receiving an injection Monday.
Around the horn
The announcement of Yankees right-hander David Phelps instead of left-hander CC Sabathia as Friday night's starting pitcher resulted from a miscommunication. Phelps, who is 5-4 with a 4.01 ERA this season, will start tonight's game.
Zach Britton (1-2, 5.51) will make his fourth start for the Orioles tonight. He's 1-3 with a 7.82 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees.
Eduardo Rodriguez, the Orioles' No. 5 prospect according to Baseball America, was promoted to Double-A Bowie after going 6-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 14 starts at High-A Frederick. Rodriguez also was picked this week to play in the Futures Game at Citi Field before the All-Star Game.
First baseman Chris Davis became the third player in baseball history with 25 or more doubles and 25 or more home runs by the end of June with his double Thursday night. The first two were Larry Walker (1997) and Todd Helton (2001). Davis is one of three Orioles to have 20 or more doubles and 20 or more homers before the All-Star break, joining Brady Anderson (1996) and B.J. Surhoff (1999).
Draft picks Mitch Horacek (left-handed pitcher, ninth round), Mike Yastrzemski (outfielder, 14th round), Dylan Rheault (right-handed pitcher, 19th round) and Donnie Hart (left-handed pitcher, 27th round) were assigned to Single-A short-season Aberdeen.
The Orioles Championship of the 2013 MLB Pitch, Hit & Run program is at 11 a.m. today at Oriole Park. A group of 24 kids ages 7-14 will compete for the right to participate in the PHR National Finals at Citi Field during All-Star Week. The top three scores in each age group advance.
