The Orioles have posted the lineup for Game 1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates today, and Manny Machado is not in it.
Fans likely will have to wait until the second game to see Machado start for the first time this season, though he was activated before the first game for his first major league action since Sept. 23.
Manager Buck Showalter said he didn't want Machado to play 18 innings on his first day back.
In a corresponding move, infielder Steve Lombardozzi (Atholton) has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.
A couple other things to note in the lineup: Jemile Weeks, who was a candidate to be sent down, is leading off and playing second base, while Ryan Flaherty is playing third base.
Also, Steve Pearce gets the start at first base. Pearce has not been with the team since April 22, when he was designated for assignment. He was released by the Orioles on Sunday and then claimed on waivers Tuesday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
But Pearce declined the claim and re-signed with the Orioles.
“It was stressful, but ultimately I’m back where I want to be, so I’m happy,” said Pearce, who had just seven at-bats before being released.
He is expected to be the primary first baseman with Chris Davis sidelined for at least two weeks.
“I just knew the opportunity was there,” Pearce said. “When I came on the team, it was mainly to be Chris’ backup and to spare him. With him down, that’s just going to open up the opportunity for me.”
