Skinny: Perhaps no one in this draft has skyrocketed more in the past few weeks. Considered a potential first-rounder for some time, he’s now being linked to every club in the top five. … A big, slick-fielding shortstop who can hit, scouts compare his tools to Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki. … Has a good eye, power and speed. … Like any big SS, a move to third base has not been ruled out. But he has the glove to stay up the middle. … Is bilingual, fluent in English and a top student. … His makeup also highly regarded; travels 90 minutes one-way each day to attend the baseball academy. … Will become the highest draft pick out of Puerto Rico in baseball history, surpassing catcher Ramon Castro, who was selected with the 17th pick overall by the Houston Astros in 1994. … Has committed to the University of Miami
Why the Orioles will take him: Because he likely will be the highest-ceiling position player available when they choose. And another top-flight infielder in the system, one that could be moved to third base if Manny Machado is entrenched at short, is enticing. They have scouted him thoroughly.
Why the Orioles won’t take him: It would be tough to pass up one of the near-ready collegiate pitchers, and at least one of those should be available. There is no concern, however, about doubling up top prospects at shortstop.
Connolly’s take: The sense is the Orioles really like this kid, as do most teams selecting high. It’s possible the Seattle Mariners, selecting third, skip University of Florida catcher Mike Zunino for Correa. That would take the decision out of the Orioles’ hands. If Correa is still there at four, the Orioles will be tempted. My gut says they ultimately pass.
