NEW YORK— Orioles designated hitter Jim Thome will be put on the disabled list with neck spasms, Orioles manger Buck Showalter said on Tuesday. Second baseman Robert Andino has rejoined the club and will replace Thome on the roster. Andino is available to play in Tuesday night’s game.

Thome returned to Baltimore for an MRI on his neck on Tuesday morning. After the procedure revealed a herniated disk, Thome plans to fly to California for an epidural, probably either on Wednesday or Thursday.

Thome has not played since Friday’s game, and he will be available to come off of the DL on August 12, when the Orioles host the Royals.

Andino’s left shoulder injury was originally expected to sideline him for three to four weeks, but he healed faster than anticipated. Tuesday is the first day he is available to come off the DL. He made two rehab starts in Norfolk on Sunday and Monday before rejoining the team on Tuesday.

Andino isn’t in the starting lineup tonight, as Omar Quintanilla is slated at second base.
