The Sporting News picked Davis as the runner-up to Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera as the publication's Major League Baseball Player of the Year. Cabrera won the award for the second straight season.
Davis led the major leagues with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs this season. He also had the most extra-base hits in the major leagues (96), easily beating Trout and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who each finished with 75.
On Wednesday, Davis was one of three Orioles picked for The Sporting News' AL All-Star team, along with center fielder Adam Jones and shortstop J.J. Hardy.
The winner of the AL Most Valuable Player award, selected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, will be announced Nov. 14. Davis is also a finalist for two MLB Players' Choice awards (MLB Player of the Year and AL Outstanding Player), which will be unveiled Nov. 4.
