SARASOTA, Fla. -- Former major league star Gary Sheffield is in Orioles training camp this morning, hoping to sell the team on former Severna Park star Josh Banks, who has pitched for the Blue Jays, Padres and Astros.

Sheffield is representing Banks, along with several other players, including pitcher Jason Grilli, but indicated that all his clients except Banks are in camp.

“He’s a local kid and he went and pitched effectively in winter ball and showed he was healthy,” Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said.

Banks apparently is going to throw in front of Orioles officials today, including player personnel director John Stockstill and pitching coordinator Rick Peterson, at the Buck O'Neil minor league complex at Twin Lakes Park.

Duquette and Sheffield go back a long time. Duquette said he signed Sheffield for the Brewers in 1986 out of Tampa's Hillsborough High.

"[Sheffield] brought him here," Duquette said of Banks, "because he sees the opportunity for pitchers to help our major league team. So Gary’s been paying attention. I’ll tell you that."
