Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will sit out next few games with right ankle sprain

The Baltimore Sun

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will likely sit out the next three days after he sprained his right ankle while crossing third base awkwardly during Tuesday’s game.

"Slight sprain, nothing too major,” said Wieters, who left Tuesday's game after the bottom of the fourth inning. “Regular season, you'd probably tough through it, but I'll take a couple days off it, and get back to full strength and be ready to go in a few days.

“I just rolled my ankle. I was coming around third and started to slow down, and my ankle just rolled over on me."

Wieters, who had his ankle heavily wrapped to help reduce the swelling, will take today off. He likely wouldn’t have played in back-to-back road games Thursday and Friday, so Wieters’ hope is to return Saturday.

"We're thinking maybe one less game than it might have been if I didn't roll it, but we'll see,” he said. “We'll get treatment on it and ice it up today, and hopefully when we come back home, be ready to go.

"Just try to stay off my feet today and see how it is tomorrow. I might take some swings tomorrow if it feels up to it."
