Orioles' Bud Norris ready for return to major leagues Monday vs. Angels

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Bud Norris, who was optioned to Double-A Bowie on July 10 so that he could pitch over the All-Star break, rejoined the club Sunday in Oakland.

Norris is set to be officially recalled today and start the series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. He was allowed to join the team one day early under baseball's taxi squad rule.

Norris threw 99 pitches in his Bowie start last Monday — the goal was to throw about 100 total — allowing three runs and four hits while striking out five batters and walking seven.

“I took care of my stuff over the break,” Norris said. “I had my Bowie start, had a couple lifts in before that, and then threw my bullpen on Friday. … I'm ready to get out there.

“They were only doing it to help me and help the team. I agree with it the whole way through. I'm glad we did it because if they needed an extra arm to help the team, this is about the team and not me. I'm glad to be back. It was kind of eerie to be away from the guys. But I'm glad to be back and excited to get back out there Monday.”

Norris was eligible to be activated Sunday, but he has had incredible success against the Angels in his career. In four starts against Los Angeles, Norris is 3-0 with a 0.32 ERA. He hasn't allowed an earned run in 13 total innings during two career starts at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. He won both starts, holding the Angels to a .159 batting average in those games.

“I've seen them a couple times,” Norris said. ”I obviously like pitching there. I think there's a few more right-handers in that lineup, which helps me out a bit, but for the most part, I've been executing pitches and having good starts, and hopefully I'll have another one tomorrow.”
