No resolution to questions on Orioles pitching, bullpen coaches yet

Several teams are announcing their coaching staffs for next year, but the Orioles haven’t yet sorted out who will handle their pitching in 2014.

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said the organization will “take a hard look at that this week and next week.”

Duquette and Orioles manager Buck Showalter would like to have the questions about the pitching and bullpen coaches resolved by the end of the month.

The rest of Showalter’s staff -- hitting coach Jim Presley, first base coach Wayne Kirby, third base coach Bobby Dickerson and extra coach Einar Diaz -- will return.

Rick Adair was the pitching coach for most of the season, but took a leave of absence on Aug. 15 to deal with personal issues that included the illness of his father, who died in September. Adair is signed through 2014, but it’s not assured that he will return to the club.

Showalter has met with Adair on more than one occasion since the season ended.

Bill Castro, who had been the club’s bullpen coach, took over for Adair as pitching coach in August. Longtime Orioles pitching instructor Scott McGregor replaced Castro as the bullpen coach.

Castro and McGregor could be assigned to other positions within the organization if they are not retained for the major league staff.
