The Orioles activated right fielder Nick Markakis (hamate bone fracture) from the 15-day disabled list after he completed a three-game injury rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie, the team announced Monday night.
In order to make room for Markakis on the 25-man roster, the Orioles optioned first baseman Joe Mahoney back to Triple-A Norfolk.
Markakis was placed on the DL for the first time in his career June 1, retroactive to May 30, with a right hamate bone fracture. He was 3-for-10 with two home runs and four RBIs during the rehab assignment with the Baysox.
Before the injury, Markakis batted .256 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 50 games for the Orioles. He will rejoin the team for the start of the second half Friday night against the Detroit Tigers at Camden Yards.
Mahoney was 0-for-3 in his major league debut Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels. He is batting .257 with 14 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBIs in 84 games for the Tides this season.
