Matt Wieters' bat heating up is good news for Orioles' lineup

The Rangers had seen enough of Orioles catcher Matt Wieters.

Following a 2-for-3 night in the Orioles’ 4-2 sweep-clinching win over the Rangers on Sunday, Wieters completed this weekend’s three-game series 6-for-12 with a homer, two RBIs and four runs scored.

Wieters has hit safely in 10 of his past 12 games, including four multi-hit games in that span. Over a current four-game hit streak, Wieters is hitting .438 (7-for-16).

He hit safely in six of the seven games against the Rangers and is hitting .370 (10-for-27) against Texas this season.

“I wish I could tell you [why],” Wieters said Sunday. “Just continue to grind, continue to work and try to get some pitches that I like and get a good swing on them. I’m sure a lot of people have theories. If they do, they can send them to me, but naw, I’m just going to keep playing and whatever happens happens.”

On Sunday, Wieters -- who is hitting .241/.302/.424 with 13 homers and 46 RBIs this season -- lifted his season average above .240 for the first time since June 13.

Wieters tends to hit better in the second half – his batting average is 21 points higher after the break over his career – and if he can continue that trend, it will be good news for the Orioles lineup.

The Orioles' batting order is dangerous top to bottom, but as the second half unfolds, major league home run leader Chris Davis will likely see fewer pitches to hit. And if Wieters, who hits behind Davis, hits well in the second half, it will make it more difficult for opponents to pitch around Davis and make the Orioles lineup even stronger.
