Injured Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, who is out for the season as he recovers from Tommy John elbow surgery, joined the club Thursday at Camden Yards.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wieters “looks great” and is in good spirits. The catcher will travel to Minnesota for the All-Star Game and hopes to rejoin the Orioles in late July, after the club’s West coast road trip.
Wieters was voted to the All-Star Game despite playing in just 26 games this year, the last on May 10. He batted .308 with five home runs in 104 at-bats.
The catcher was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 11 with a right elbow strain. He underwent surgery last month.
Here are more updates from Showalter’s pregame press conference:
** Right-hander Bud Norris won’t start Sunday on three days' rest. However, he could be used in relief that night. Showalter said he wants Norris, who made his first start since coming off the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, to resume a consistent pitching schedule.
** Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez will start Friday against the New York Yankees, Showalter said.
** Right-hander Kevin Gausman will start Sunday for Triple-A Norfolk. Showalter said Gausman won’t be limited to an inning or pitch count.
** Showalter said right-hander Steve Johnson could be contributor to the Orioles if he’s healthy. Johnson, who has been dealing with shoulder issues, tossed two scoreless innings Wednesday for Single-A Aberdeen.
