Orioles' Manny Machado to have knee surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles

CHICAGO -- Orioles third baseman Manny Machado’s season-ending right knee surgery is scheduled to be performed Wednesday in Los Angeles, manager Buck Showalter announced Sunday before the Orioles’ 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Machado was expected to remain with the team on the flight back to Baltimore on Sunday, but he will leave for California on Tuesday. He is expected to remain on the West Coast for about three weeks, returning to Baltimore around Sept. 17-18.

The Orioles hope Machado will be full strength by the beginning of spring training next year.

“If everything goes well, he’ll have a normal spring training instead of the one he had this spring,” Showalter said. “He’ll be ready to go in February and March and the first part of games, if everything goes the way the timing goes. I think having an idea what’s ahead of him and knowing a little bit more [helps].”

Showalter said Machado has decided to rehabilitate from the surgery at the Orioles’ spring training complex in Sarasota, Fla., instead of Miami, his hometown, as he did following surgery on his left knee last October.

“I have I think there’s a little more … privacy,” Showalter said about Sarasota. “You walk in, there’s a gate, you come in and do your stuff [instead of] going to a rehab center in Miami. It’s Manny’s decision completely, but I’m glad.”

Machado’s surgery, which will be performed by Los Angeles Dodgers team orthopedist Dr. Neal ElAttrache, will include harvesting a tendon from the 22-year-old’s hamstring to repair the partially torn medial patellofemoral ligament in his right knee. He had the same surgery last season, also performed by ElAttrache, to repair the same ligament in his left knee.

In spring training this year, Machado was set back by nagging calf and hamstring ailments in his left leg.

“He would have [had a normal spring], but the problem is we didn’t have any buffer,” Showalter said. “We had a couple things there that weren’t really related, but somewhat related, to the surgery that set him back that [otherwise] could have. I think being able to eliminate all that before the games start, we’ve got a better shot at it.

The Orioles plan to hold a minicamp in mid-January in Sarasota for pitchers and players returning from injuries that Machado would attend.

“We’re hoping by that time we’re nearing the end of it,” Showalter said.

Showalter does have one target date listed on his calendar for Machado.

“I know his wedding is Dec. 6,” Showalter said. “We’ve got to make sure he’s walking by then.”
