Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman was optioned to the club's Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team after Wednesday night's 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Camden Yards.
A corresponding move will be made before Thursday's series finale.
Gausman allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in four innings before being removed from the game after 80 pitches in the loss, but the roster move is not related to his performance. He was informed of the move in manager Buck Showalter's office shortly after the game.
The transaction is considered procedural, as players can be recalled from a minor league affiliate without waiting the required 10 days once that affiliate's season ends.
The GCL season ends Thursday for the Orioles, meaning Gausman and left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, who also was optioned to the affiliate Wednesday, can return when the rosters expand Sept. 1.
Gausman will be back to make his next scheduled start, either Monday against the Minnesota Twins or Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez also is under consideration to make Monday's start.
With Wednesday's loss, Gausman fell to 7-6 with a 3.84 ERA this season.
