Kevin Gausman’s start for short-season Single-A Aberdeen on Wednesday was expected to be brief, and it was as the right-hander went just two innings for the IronBirds in a 29-pitch outing.
Gausman allowed one unearned run and one hit with one strikeout and a walk.
Gausman retired the first four hitters he faced before he gave up a one-out single followed by a walk in the second inning. A run then scored on shortstop Austin Pfeiffer’s errant throw as he attempted to turn an inning-ending double play.
Twenty of Gausman’s 29 pitches were strikes, and his fastball hit 98 mph several times on the stadium radar gun, according to the team.
Gausman could be recalled to start Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
