Injuries to Mark Reynolds, Chris Davis could prompt more roster shuffling

The Orioles could be racing to fill their roster after injuries to two key starters on Thursday.

First baseman Mark Reynolds took a pitch to the outside of his left hand, but remained in the game after several minutes of being checked out by head trainer Richie Bancells.

Following the game, his thumb was visibly swollen beneath a huge ice wrap, but he said he was confident nothing was broken and that he’d be able to play Friday.

"You know, I’m sure it will be sore in the morning," Reynolds said. "But I’ll just ice it."

Also, right fielder Chris Davis was scratched from the starting lineup before Thursday’s 9-7 loss to the Angels with a right trapezius strain.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the club has made “contingency plans,” but that X-rays would be taken before any moves are made.

If they make a DL move, the club would be able to recall infielder Steve Tolleson, who normally couldn’t be activated until his 10-day window since his last option is fulfilled Saturday.

Following the game, the Orioles optioned right-hander Jake Arrieta, so they have to make a corresponding move before Friday's game. They would likely fill that spot with a pitcher.

The team added an extra position player on Thursday, recalling first baseman Joe Mahoney to fill the spot vacated by right-hander Chris Tillman, who was optioned to Double-A Bowie so he could still pitch over the all-star break.
