Orioles outfield prospect Henry Urrutia will undergo sports hernia surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
He will have the procedure in Philadelphia and it will be performed by Dr. William Meyers.
Urrutia hasn’t been in the Triple-A Norfolk lineup since April 27 and was hitting .220/.250/.293 with no homers and seven RBIs in 20 games for the Tides.
The 27-year-old Urrutia had been dealing with the injury for more than two weeks and tried playing through it. That could partially explain Urrutia’s slow start to the season after a strong spring training.
Davis takes BP
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis took pregame batting practice outdoors for the first time since landing on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle.
He sprayed the Camden Yards seats with home run balls during the session, hitting 15 balls out of the park in his final four rounds.
If Davis recovers well tomorrow, he could begin a rehab assignment on Saturday with a minor league affiliate to be determined. Davis said he didn’t know where he’d report or how long he might be there.
Wieters resting sore elbow
Catcher Matt Wieters said there’s still no timetable on when he will be able to throw. Right now, he’s getting rest and treatment for his sore throwing elbow.
Wieters took grounders before Thursday’s game in Tampa Bay, which he said he did partially to give him something to do while he can’t catch.
Wieters is the Orioles’ starting desiganted hitter on Friday, for the second straight day.
