Orioles prospect Hunter Harvey retires Dariel Alvarez in Futures Game

The Orioles’ two participants in the annual Futures Game ended up facing each other in the fourth inning Sunday at Target Field in Minneapolis.

And Low-A Delmarva right-hander Hunter Harvey got the best of Double-A Bowie outfielder Dariel Alvarez, inducing an inning-ending groundout to escape a jam.

Harvey, 19, pitching for the United States Futures team in the top all-star game for minor league prospects, struck out the first two World Futures batters he faced in the fourth, including heralded infield prospect Francisco Lindor of the Cleveland Indians.

With two outs, Harvey allowed a double to Kennys Vargas of the Minnesota Twins organization and then walked Steven Moya of the Detroit Tigers organization. That brought up Alvarez, the Cuban defector who arguably has become the Orioles’ top position prospect after batting .309 with 14 homers in 91 games for Bowie this year.

Alvarez, 25, grounded into a force out to the shortstop. And Harvey, the club’s top draft pick last year who has a 3.01 ERA in 15 starts at Delmarva, emerged with a scoreless inning. He threw 22 pitches, 11 for strikes.

In Alvarez’s other at-bat Sunday, he also grounded out to the shortstop. That at-bat was against Daniel Norris, a left-hander from the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Alvarez, who batted sixth and played right field for the World Futures team, was taken out in the fifth inning for a defensive substitution.
