Ex-big league pitcher Fossum signed to minor league deal

The Orioles have agreed to a minor league deal with former major league left-hander Casey Fossum, according to an industry source. It's unclear whether he will receive a spring invitation to big league camp.

Fossum, 34, last pitched in the majors in 2009, when he appeared in three games and posted a 2.25 ERA as a reliever for the New York Mets. He pitched in nine games with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo last season and spent 2010 pitching in Japan.

A veteran of nine major league seasons, he is 40-53 with a 5.45 ERA in 237 career games.

Fossum was a first-round supplemental pick (48th overall) of the Boston Red Sox in 1999, when current Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette was the Red Sox general manager.

Fossum was originally drafted out of high school in 1996 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who at the time were led by current Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

Fossum made his debut in 2001 and spent three seasons with the Red Sox before he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in November 2003 as a key part of the 4-for-1 Curt Schilling deal.  Fossum also has pitched for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Detroit Tigers.
