Matusz, who pitched the entire season as a reliever last year, is continuing to be stretched out as if he were going to start. He threw 60 pitches Tuesday and mixed all four of his pitches in each inning.
“I was able to get five ups, so I think that was the ultimate goal -- to continue to build, and I was able to get that work in,” Matusz said.
A right wrist injury is still ailing Peguero, who will have to wear a brace on the wrist for the next two weeks.
“It’s frustrating because I can’t do anything right now,” Peguero said. “I’m trying to make the team and I can’t do that.”
Escalona was shut down earlier in camp with shoulder tightness. He said Wednesday that he hopes to start shoulder exercises this week and could resume throwing in 1 1/2 weeks. Still, he won't be ready in time for Opening Day.
"I have to keep my chin up and continue," Escalona said. "This happens. This is baseball. Sometimes you’re going to be good, and sometimes you’re going to be bad. A couple weeks ago, I [felt] bad. Now, I feel better."
