Darren O'Day rejoins Orioles in Boston, Miguel Gonzalez now an option to start Saturday

BOSTON -- Orioles right-handed reliever Darren O’Day jumped on a flight to Boston this morning and arrived at Fenway Park during batting practice. He will be available to pitch in relief tonight.

O’Day, who received two injections in his right hand and wrist area to reduce nerve inflammation that had been causing numbness and tingling in his fingers, was evaluated Wednesday morning after a bullpen session on Tuesday.

“He said today he feels good, good enough to pitch,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “He’s coming. It’s pretty simple this time of year. It’s yes or no.”

** The condition of right-hander Miguel Gonzalez’s right groin strain improved significantly, and Showalter said Gonzalez could now be an option to start Saturday in Tampa Bay along with right-hander Bud Norris. The club will make that decision Thursday after Gonzalez throws a light bullpen session before the game.

-- Orioles slugger Chris Davis not only set a single-season club record with his 51st homer last night. He also broke Brady Anderson’s single-season record of 92 extra-base hits. Davis is the fifth left-handed hitter in AL history to hit 51 or more homers and have 132 or more RBIs, joining Babe Ruth (1920, ’21, ’27, ’28), Ken Griffey, Jr. (1997, ’98), Roger Maris (1961) and David Ortiz (2006)

-- In four games on this road trip, Orioles pitchers have held opponents to a .050 average (1-for-20) with runners in scoring position, stranding 23 runners on base.
