Dana Eveland turns in a quality start — of sorts

Some baseball fans complain about the quality start statistic.

Friday night’s game would be an exhibit in that argument.

Lefty Dana Eveland, making his Orioles and 2012 MLB debut, allowed just three runs in six innings, which qualifies as a quality start.

Eveland allowed just five hits, but he walked six (one intentional) and hit two more batters. So that’s 13 baserunners in six innings. The bottom line, though, is only three of those runners scored. And Eveland left before the seventh with the Orioles only down 3-2.

So in that aspect, Eveland did what the Orioles wanted him to.

The Orioles managed just five hits against Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson in 6 2/3 innings. But two were big blows. Adam Jones hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season in the second. Nick Markakis hit his sixth in the sixth inning.

Jones, who had 25 homers last year, didn’t hit his 10th until June 18 last year. Markakis, who homered 15 times in 2011, didn’t hit his sixth until June 25 last season.
