Prediction here is that Orioles will make a trade

Today is the start of the winter meetings in Nashville and you know what that means O’s fans?

About 96 hours of speculation.

Well, here’s a little hot stove conjecture to warm your coffee. Take it for what it is worth (and, yes, I know what it is worth).

I believe the Orioles will make a trade – either here or within a few days of the meetings. And my sense is that trade will have a little more juice than last year’s winter-meetings blockbuster that brought lefty Dana Eveland to Baltimore for two minor leaguers.

I had one club source tell me that the team has the pieces to pull off a pretty significant deal for a power hitter right now – but they have to decide whether to pull the trigger.

Executive VP Dan Duquette told all of the Baltimore reporters last night that the power bat was his biggest priority, and that an addition is more likely to come in the form of a trade. Any free agent signings are likely to be “complements” to the current roster.

So forget about Josh Hamilton – no matter what you might read.

But I think landing a first baseman or designated hitter with pop is a real possibility. (Before you all have Billy Butler dancing in your head, know that it’ll take a whole lot, including an established starting pitcher, to pry the popular designated hitter from Kansas City).

The challenge for us in the next four days is to find out whom the Orioles have targeted and what they will give up.

The Orioles seem willing to deal from their starting pitching surplus. Now they have to agree on a match.

Stay tuned – for the next few days. Ed Encina and I will do our best to give you whatever we can as soon as we can.
