I have a buddy of mine that calls every now and then and starts the conversation with this phrase, “Do you believe yet?”
I only laugh.
I’m not paid to buy into this team – or not to buy in, for that matter. That’s the job of the knowledgeable and passionate Oriole fan.
I’m paid to look at this club objectively, put aside my Baltimore roots, and tell you what I honestly think.
What I honestly think is that these Orioles should not be seven games over .500 on August 7. They should not be right in the thick of the wild-card race.
They have a shoddy defense, a patchwork rotation and an offense that can’t come through when it has runners in scoring position.
And yet they are winning, they are in the hunt.
It confounds me – except that the bullpen has been so good that it allows the offense to come on late and win close (and extra-inning) contests. It’s also what is cool about sports; they, indeed, have to play the games.
Can this Orioles’ run last?
I have no idea. Conventional wisdom says no. But conventional wisdom hasn’t worked so far this year.
So I am just enjoying the fact that the fans are still interested, and still reading with preseason football looming.
Therefore, I want you to answer my buddy’s simple question – you don’t have to analyze it if you don’t want to. Just answer honestly.
Daily Think Special: Do you believe yet in these Orioles?
