Comings and goings from Day 5 of Orioles spring training camp

Today was report day for Orioles position players here at the Ed Smith Stadium Complex, but it was pretty uneventful because most of the team's position players were already here.

The left wall of the Orioles' clubhouse, which is where most of the team's position players are located -- the catchers take up the far wall, and pitchers are along the right and near sides -- is nearly full. Newcomers today included Josh Bell, who rode his bike into camp today, Jai Miller and Endy Chavez.

-- Some interesting news today: Showalter said second baseman Brian Roberts will take the field with the team for the club's first full workout Friday. That's pretty interesting considering we haven't seen much of Roberts so far this camp. Roberts and Showalter were talking in the outfield of the turf field for a while at the end of today's workout. Friday will also be the first time Roberts speaks with the media, and it will likely take some type of press conference format after Friday's workout has concluded.

-- Add right-hander Jason Berken to the list of injured Orioles players. Berken tweaked his left hamstring during conditioning exercises today. The severity of the injury is unknown, but we should know more tomorrow.

-- Right-hander Jim Johnson threw off a half mound for the first time. The favorite to win the closer role said he feels no pain in his lower back and added that he will throw off a full mound Saturday. It seems like he would be a full go after that. Left-hander Zach Britton (shoulder inflammation) threw the first half of his second set of back-to-back throwing days.

-- Former Orioles outfielder Matt Angle, who was designated for assignment after the club signed reliever Luis Ayala, was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers.

-- Jason Hammel, Kevin Gregg, Ayala, Jake Arrieta, Tommy Hunter, Tsuyoshi Wada, Dana Eveland, Matt Lindstrom, Darren O'Day, Brad Bergesen, Alfredo Simon, Pedro Strop, Troy Patton and Zach Phillips threw bullpen sessions today.

-- Again, Friday will be the team's first full squad workout. Player physicals for position players will be conducted in the morning, so the team will have a later workout start time of noon.
