Tillman shines, but Orioles drop 6-1 decision to Red Sox

Right-hander Chris Tillman pitched three scoreless innings Sunday in the Orioles’ 6-1 Grapefruit League loss to the Boston Red Sox before a sellout crowd of 8,316 at Ed Smith Stadium.

Tillman pitched the middle innings of game that also featured new rotation candidate Dana Eveland, who was acquired from Los Angeles Dodgers during the Winter Meetings in December. He pitched the first two innings and gave up three runs (only one earned) on six hits and struck out two batters.

It was a sloppy game for the Orioles, who fell behind by two runs after a costly second-inning error by first baseman Chris Davis allowed another run to cross the plate on a bad relay throw by second baseman Steve Tolleson.

Boston starter Jon Lester gave up just a run on one hit over four innings to get the victory. Dustin Pedroia had a single and a two-run double and Cody Ross had a pair of singles for the Red Sox.

Center fielder Adam Jones drove in the only run for the Orioles with an RBI single that scored Robert Andino in the first inning.

The other game

The Orioles and Red Sox played a "B" game Sunday morning on one of the back fields at the Ed Smith Stadium complex, which allowed Showalter to get some important work for several major league pitchers.

Tommy Hunter, who has been slow out of the blocks because of lower back soreness, pitched three extended innings. Zach Britton tested his shoulder in his first competitive appearance this spring. Relievers Kevin Gregg and Jim Johnson also pitched an inning apiece.

Britton said that he had no problems and felt great afterward, but still has to wait and see how he feels when he wakes up Monday.

"There is always a little doubt because I was facing hitters and there's a different level of adrenaline,'' he said. "I feel great. That might be the adrenaline talking, but I feel great right now."

Bundy also pitched two innings in the "B" game and continued to impress the coaching staff with his velocity and composure.
