Chris Davis loses Players' Choice awards to Cabrera

On Tuesday evening, Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will find out whether he is a finalist for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.

On Monday night, he lost his first two awards battles of the offseason with Detroit Tigers third baseman and defending AL MVP Miguel Cabrera.

As part of the Players’ Choice Awards, voted on by current members of the Major League Baseball Players Association and announced Monday, Cabrera won both the AL Outstanding Player and the overall Player of the Year awards after leading the major leagues in batting average (.348), on-base percentage (.442) and slugging percentage (.636).

Davis, who led the majors with 53 homers and 138 RBIs, and Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout were the other nominees for the AL award. Davis and Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw joined Cabrera as finalists for Player of the Year, which wasn’t limited by league or position.

Cabrera and likely Davis, Trout or Oakland’s Josh Donaldson are expected to be the finalists for the Baseball Writers Association of America’s AL MVP Award. The finalists for all of the BBWAA Awards -- which also includes Cy Young, Rookie and Manager -- will be announced Tuesday evening on MLB Network.

The AL and NL MVP award winners will be announced Nov. 14.

Davis should get his first big award this week, however. Silver Sluggers, for best offensive players at each position, will be announced Wednesday and Davis should win it for AL first basemen.
