Brian Roberts to finish minor league rehab assignment with week on the road with Norfolk

The Orioles have planned out the remainder of second baseman Brian Roberts' minor league rehab assignment, and he will complete his assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on the road.

"We talked about really wanting to finish up competition-wise in Triple-A," Showalter said. "That's tentative if we don't have any setbacks.

"It's also the way the schedule fell. Everyone's on the road. I think at that stage Robby felt he wanted to face the best competition he could."

For position players like Roberts, who hasn't played in a major league game in more than a year and is attempting a comeback from multiple concussions, minor league rehab assignments are limited to 20 days.

He played at Double-A Bowie on Monday afternoon, completing a five-game stint with the Baysox with a 1-for-3 day with a double.

From there, he will head to low Class-A Delmarva for home games Tuesday and Wednesday against Hickory. He is then slated to return to Bowie for their weekend series against Reading from Friday to Sunday.

Roberts will then complete his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on the road. The Tides travel to Rochester for four games next Tuesday through Friday and then play in Buffalo June 9-12.

The final day of Roberts' rehab assignment is June 11, but the Orioles could ask the commissioner's office for an extension if they feel Roberts isn't ready.

That would be the first time Roberts plays rehab games on the road, which would be a considerable step in his recovery.

"That's part of it," Showalter said. "Anything you can do to simulate the climate and whatever he's going to be challenged with here."
