The Orioles will purchase the contract of veteran infielder/outfielder Bill Hall today and place him on the club's 25- and 40-man rosters in order to fill the loss of right fielder Nick Markakis, according to a club source.

Markakis, who will be placed on the DL for the first time in his major league career, is having surgery to remove a broken hamate bone in his right wrist and is slated to be out between two-to-four weeks.

Hall, 32, gives the Orioles some positional flexibility, something they will need with just two healthy true outfielders  -- Adam Jones and Endy Chavez -- currently on the 25-man roster. Ryan Flaherty and Wilson Betemit have also played outfield this season.

The Orioles must make a corresponding 40-man roster move to accommodate Hall. One likely possibility is transferring second baseman Brian Roberts to the 60-man disabled list. It's an easy move because Roberts was placed on the 15-day DL on March 26, so he's been on the disabled list for more than 60 days and his minor league rehab assignment window doesn't end until June 11.

This will be Hall's second stint with the Orioles within a span of three weeks. Hall was 2-for-7 in six games with the Orioles earlier this month, hitting .286/.545/.714 with one homer and one RBI, making starts in left field and DH.

Hall's contract was purchased from Triple-A Norfolk on May 12, but in the midst of a rash of injuries, he was designated for assignment May 25. He eventually cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.

On the season, Hall is hitting .222/.272/.373 in 21 games at Norfolk. He's 5-for-23 in six games since returning to the Tides.
