Flaherty, 26, was hitting .133 with a .228 on-base percentage and a .233 slugging percentage in 90 at-bats over 30 games for the Orioles this season. He had two homers and six RBIs. Flaherty appeared in Saturday’s game as a defensive replacement.
The Orioles recalled Yamaico Navarro from Norfolk on Tuesday and he started the past two games at second base. Navarro and Alexi Casilla likely will handle second base duties while Flaherty concentrates on playing every day at Norfolk.
The club is not announcing a corresponding move until Sunday.
Because Orioles manager Buck Showalter believes the bullpen is in decent shape, the Orioles could add another right-handed hitter with Nolan Reimold placed on the disabled list Saturday.
Right-handed hitters Danny Valencia and Russ Canzler are options, as is lefty Travis Ishikawa – all of whom were hitting well for the Tides. Valencia was not in Norfolk's lineup Saturday. He is hitting .306 with 11 homers for the Tides.
